A 24-hour history event broadcast across TV, web, mobile devices and social media, telling the story of D-Day in a completely new way by following seven people who were actually there, in real time.
—
I conceived the ‘As It Happens’ format in a bid to bring a fresh perspective on one of the most talked about days in history. By following seven people, moment by moment, in real time, viewers and web users were transported back to the day itself, when the outcome was far from certain and the fear very real. The event was bookended by two television shows in which remastered archive footage from D-Day was played and analysed at the very moment it was shot. Viewers could then go online to track the seven characters and receive present tense updates on their progress via Twitter and the programme website.
The innovative approach of the programme was recognised with a BAFTA, an Emmy and a whole host of other awards.
